Centennial College partnered with The Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT) and Urban Minds to gather data on the current landscape of commuting patterns at Progress Campus, and provide the College with recommendations on how they can encourage greater adoption of sustainable transportation in the future. The study initially focused on active transportation adoption (walking, cycling, etc.) but expanded to include public transit and carpooling due to Centennial’s interest in understanding a broader scope of commuting options outside of single occupancy vehicles. The final report from the study includes 34 recommendations covering policy, infrastructure, and education to encourage sustainable mobility within the college community.

Key findings from the report include:

 1. Different Commuting Patterns: Students mostly use transit, while staff primarily drive. Tailored approaches are needed to promote active transportation for each group.

 2. Prioritize Pedestrian Experience: Repurpose road space for wider sidewalks, raised intersections, accessible ramps, and other traffic calming measures. Enhance sidewalks with seating, lighting, art, greenery, and protection from the elements.

 3. Increase Access to Bikes: Lack of access to bikes is the main barrier to cycling. Establish a community bike hub offering free bike loans and collaborate with Bike Share Toronto to bring bikes to campus.

 4. Enhance Cycling Infrastructure: Safe and secure bike parking and dedicated bike lanes are crucial for encouraging cycling. Provide bike repair stations, e-bike charging stations, and shower facilities for cyclists.

 5. Improve Public Transit Experience: Enhance the transit waiting area with more seating, weather protection, Presto machines, lighting, and other amenities. Improve walking connections to the transit area and explore transit pass options for students.

 6. Address Winter Challenges: Winter weather poses a significant barrier to sustainable mobility. Develop strategies to create more winter-friendly experiences on all Centennial campuses.

 7. Continued Engagement and Data Collection: Ongoing community engagement and data collection are essential for the success of sustainable mobility initiatives. Co-create strategies with staff and students, monitor progress and adapt initiatives as needed.
