In the spring of 2020, Toronto launched its popular ActiveTO program as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This included a complete street pilot project along Danforth Avenue from Broadview Avenue to Dawes Road. Just yesterday, in an exciting win for cycling advocates and Torontonians alike, city council approved seven cycling routes that will be immediately made permanent, including Danforth Avenue.
In September and October of 2020, TCAT collaborated with Park People in assisting the City of Toronto with evaluating this initiative; these evaluations were designed with the goal of best informing future recommendations on the Destination Danforth complete street pilot project. A city survey found that more than 90% of respondents wanted ActiveTO road closures to live beyond the pandemic.
An important step in striving towards healthier and safer roadways for all, this recent decision will allow more people to choose cycling more often! Read the full article here.
