Strachan Avenue Rail Crossing - Public Meeting November 5
Last September, TCAT made a deputation to Toronto and East York
Community Council in support of a proposal to study an alternate
crossing for the current at-grade crossing of the rail corridor on
Strachan Avenue. We stressed the fact that any new crossing design
should meet the safety needs of cyclist and pedestrians first, since
this is a major connection to the waterfront.
From a recent notice from Councillor Joe Pantalone's office, TCAT
has learned that this study is underway and that there is a public
meeting tomorrow evening to present the City's preferred option for a
new crossing design. TCAT has also learned that there is a possibility
that the new design is a tunnel under the rail corridor. If that is the
case, TCAT will likely not support this option, since tunnels are
generally not good options for cycling and walking. If you can - and
especially if you live in the area - please attend tomorrow's meeting
and voice your support for cycling and pedestrian friendly
infrastructure design.
Date: Wednesday, November 5
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Trinity Recreation Centre (Main Gym), 155 Crawford Street
From Councillor Pantalone's notice:
Proposal
GO Transit has initiated an Individual Environmental Assessment
to examine proposed improvements along GO's Georgetown South rail
corridor that would meet increasing demand and future need for GO Train
service to the communities along the corridor between Halton and Peel
Regions and the City of Toronto. One of the rail crossings to be examined in this study is the
Strachan Avenue at-grade rail crossing with the GO Georgetown/Milton
line located between Wellington Street and East Liberty Street. The
City of Toronto will be participating in this GO study and will be
providing comments related to the alternatives and proposals by GO
Transit.Purpose of the Meeting
You are invited to attend a public meeting to review the City's
preferred option to replace the existing at-grade crossing of Strachan
Avenue and the GO Georgetown/Milton line. This preferred option will
become part of the City of Toronto's response and input into GO
Transit's Individual Environmental Assessment Study of the "Georgetown
South Corridor Service Expansion and Airport Transportation Link
between Lester B. Pearson Airport and Union Station."If any further information is required, please contact my
office or Eric Pedersen, Program Manager, City of Toronto, City
Planning at 416-392-1130 or by email at epederse@toronto.ca.
