The Complete Streets Forum 2012, organized by the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT), took place on April 23, 2012 at Evergreen Brick Works. With funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, TCAT produced a research report titled Complete Streets Gap Analysis: Opportunities and Barriers in Ontario, that provides an analysis of the potential for Complete Streets in 17 of Ontario’s largest municipalities.

Highlights from a TCAT report released in 2010 comparing the performance of active transportation in Toronto against other cities in Canada, the United States and Europe using key indicators as benchmarks. This paper was presented at the Walk 21 Conference in Vancouver, BC on October 4, 2011 and published in their proceedings.

Summary of the main findings of two research studies (Bike Lanes, On-Street Parking and Business. A Study of Bloor Street in Toronto's Annex Neighbourhood and Bike Lanes, On-Street Parking and Business Year 2 Report: A Study of Bloor Street in Toronto's Bloor West Village) conducted to determine the public acceptability and potential economic impact of reallocating road space from on-street parking to bike lanes or widened sidewalks.

This research, commissioned by the City of Toronto, teases out issues relevant to community-based walkability audit tools - tools administered by community members, without the need for formal training. The paper was presented at the Walk 21 Conference in the Hague, Holland on November 18, 2010 and published in their proceedings.

On Oct 11, 2012, TCAT released its latest backgrounder, The Economic Impacts of Active Transportation. This backgrounder discusses some of the economic impacts related to walking and cycling within an urban environment, in terms of impacts on businesses and real estate, personal and public finances, and indirect impacts such as health and productivity.

On July 5, 2012 TCAT launched the Complete Streets for Canada Policy and Design Hub made possible by generous funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

With funding from the Toronto Community Foundation, TCAT produced Complete Streets by Design: Toronto streets redesigned for all ages and abilities to show how six Toronto streets could look and feel redesigned as Complete Streets.

A short promotional video of highlights from the Complete Streets Forum in 2011 organized by the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation (TCAT). Each year TCAT holds an active transportation forum (Bike Summit 2008 and 2009, Complete Streets Forum 2010 and 2011) in Toronto, Ontario Canada that is attended by hundreds of registrants. The video is edited by Chris Beaver with a soundtrack featuring an original song written and performed by the Canadian band The Geese.

In response to the City of Toronto's renewed interest in off-road path construction, TCAT has developed a backgrounder on Designing Off-Road Paths for Pedestrians and Cyclists. This backgrounder is the second in TCAT's backgrounder series, the first of which focused on Bikeway Options currently under consideration in Toronto.

TCAT sent a SafeTrucks endorsement letter to the Minister of Transport in suppor of Private Member’s Bill C-344 which would require trucks operating on Canada’s roads to be equipped with sideguards, a measure to improve the safety of cyclists.

On Jan 29, 2013 TCAT made a submission to MTO in response to its draft Cycling Strategy. We begin our comments by describing two key issues that are not currently addressed in the draft strategy – 1) the need for targets to measure success, and 2) the need for a province-wide Complete Streets policy. We then provide specific feedback to the Cycling Strategy document released Nov 30, 2012. Read our full submission here.

On Nov 23, 2012 TCAT made a joint submission with Cycle Toronto, Eco Justice, and Transport Action, its second response to the Provincial Policy Statement, 2005. (TCAT's first response from 2010 can be found here.)

October 2012
On October 10, 2012 TCAT submitted a submission to the Public Works & Infrastructure Commitee regarding changing the definition of a bicycle to include e-bikes. TCAT was one of the organizations invited by the Ministry of Transportation to provide input into e-bike regulations. As a result, we were pleased to see that new safety requirements were legislated.

April 2012
In response to concerns related to the initial Fall of 2011 rollout of the InfoPillars (120 in total are called for by the City in the agreement), and their placement on Toronto's streets, City of Toronto staff explored a number of options with Astral. These included elimination of the element entirely, reducing the numbers to be deployed, redesign the ad faces, enhanced transit shelter ad capabilities, as well as variations on the placement parameters.
